Choice 6: Matthew 3:13–17. The Baptism of Jesus Christ
Review Matthew 3:13–17 and the institute student manual
commentary for Matthew 3:16, “What Is the Significance of the Holy Ghost
Descending ‘like a Dove’?” (pp. 28–29). Then write answers to the following
questions:
·
Why was John hesitant to baptize Jesus?
·
What is taught here about the Holy Ghost?
This selection talks about how the holy ghost comes down "like a dove." We know that the Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit and so cannot literally come down in the form of a dove no more than we could fit in a dove. There for this symbolic to the innocence and truth of the Holy Ghost. So it is talking metaphorically of how the dove is coming down. We also learn that the Holy Ghost is lighting upon Christ. So it adds extra light and knowledge and is there to be with us as we are worthy to have it's influence to guide us.
·
Jesus Christ said He must be baptized to “fulfill all righteousness.” List
three reasons why Jesus Christ was baptized (see 2 Nephi 31:6–11).
1) He shows an example for all men to follow. That there is only one way in which to get into the kingdom of heaven and that first step is baptism. 2) He did it to fulfill and be obedient to the law of baptism, (it is a commandment and ALL must obey and have it even the sinless)
3) Allowing people to take Christ name upon them and be forgiven of their own sine.
·
What evidence is found in Matthew 3:16–17 that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
are three separate personages in the Godhead?
You have Jesus Christ being baptized, the holy Ghost descending upon Jesus, and the Father saying He is well pleased. They have to be different
