Mark 14:3–9; Matthew 26:6–13. The Savior Anointed

I decided to do this activity because as I read through all of them this is the one that I felt I didn’t really know answers to. So I decided that I was going to do this choice so that I could better understand the thought process behind it and find out the answers to these questions.

Unit One

Topic Choices (Choose One)

Choice 3: Mark 14:3–9; Matthew 26:6–13. The Savior Anointed

  1. Review Mark 14:3–9 and Matthew 26:6–13. Then write answers to the following questions:
    • What reason is given for why the woman anointed the Savior with “very precious” (costly) ointment?
      1. To prepare Christ’s body for burial
    • What does Mark 14:8 imply that she understood? (see also Mark 9:31–32).
      1. She understood that the Savior would be given into the hands of men and be killed and that he was to be buried so she was preparing Christ body for that time.
    • Why did some of the disciples feel indignant and call her action a “waste”?
      1. They felt like this was a waste to spread on the master when in fact it could be sold and the money from it given to the poor and needy.
  2. The Savior said that the woman had “wrought a good work” and that wherever the gospel would be preached, the woman’s deed would “be spoken of for a memorial of her” (Mark 14:6, 9).
    • What did the woman do that made it an act worthy of the Savior’s praise and our remembrance?
      1. She took what the Lord had said earlier and instead of being in denial of it like the disciples. She instead was preparing for that time in the best way that she knew she could, anointing the lord and his body with oil.
    • How is the woman an example to you?
      1. She listened to what the savior was teaching and accepted it instead of fighting against it. It is like when the Lord asks us to do things that we might not like or when we find things out that we are scared about that instead of waiting that time, making sure and being prepared for it so that when it comes we are ready and willing to follow that counsel.
    • Write a paragraph describing some ways that you could give the Lord something valuable. (see Matthew 25:40).
      1. After seeing what the lady had done for the Lord I decided to take a similar approach to it as she did, doing the things the Lord has said and doing them with faith and knowing they will come but preparing. For example we can’t wait to do missionary work with some of our friends. We never know when the Lord will come or will call them home. We need to help people understand this gospel in a way that is best for them. Another things that I was thinking that I could, and will do is become a more active temple goer and doing the work for those deceased. The temple is so close to me and yet I hardly go anymore. I need to be like when I was in high school and make temple a mandatory thing and plan for each week. This way I can be closer to the Lord and more importantly I can help all those brethren and sisters that are waiting for their work to be done. Finally I can listen and find things that the Prophet has counseled us to do as individuals and family and start applying them to my life. Also I believe that I need to prepare for things like being a husband and good father now, before they happen so that I can know what the Lord has to say about it and what the Lord would have my family do. I also have decided that I need to find more revelations about the second coming and the things that I need to do to prepare for that and make sure that I am doing all things necessary for that time so that then and at the judgment seat my family will all be received into celestial glory.
